SA 8000 for Social Accountability

SA 8000 is an auditable certification standard that encourages organizations to develop, maintain, and apply socially acceptable practices in the workplace. It was developed in 1997 by Social Accountability International (SAI), formerly the Council on Economic Priorities, by an advisory board consisting of trade unions, NGOs, civil society organizations and companies. The SA 8000 streamlines the complexities of navigating industry and corporate codes to create a common language and standard for measuring social compliance. As it can be applied worldwide to any organisation in any industry, it is an extremely useful tool in measuring, comparing, and verifying social accountability in the workplace.

SA 8000 certification is a management systems standard, modelled on ISO standards. The management systems criteria require that facilities seeking to gain and maintain certification must go beyond simple compliance to the standard, but also integrate it into their management systems and practices and demonstrate ongoing conformance with the standard. SA 8000 is based on the principles of international human rights norms as described in International Labour Organisation conventions, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It measures the performance of companies in eight areas important to social accountability in the workplace:

  • Child Labour

  • Forced and Compulsory Labour

  • Health and Safety

  • Freedom of Association & Right to Collective Bargaining

  • Discrimination

  • Disciplinary Practices

  • Working Hours

  • Remuneration

ISO 22000 FSMS for Food & Beverage Industry

ISO 22000 FSMS International Standard specifies the requirements for a food safety management system that combines the following generally recognized key elements to ensure food safety along the food chain, up to the point of final consumption:

  • interactive communication;
  • system management;
  • prerequisite programmes;
  • HACCP principles.

ISO 22000 FSMS International Standard integrates the principles of the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system and application steps developed by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. By means of auditable requirements, it combines the HACCP plan with prerequisite programmes (PRPs). Hazard analysis is the key to an effective food safety management system, since conducting a hazard analysis assists in organizing the knowledge required to establish an effective combination of control measures.

ISO 22000 FSMS International Standard requires that all hazards that may be reasonably expected to occur in the food chain, including hazards that may be associated with the type of process and facilities used, are identified and assessed. Thus ISO 22000 FSMS provides the means to determine and document why certain identified hazards need to be controlled by a particular organization and why others need not.

HACCP for Food & Beverage Industry & Service

Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point or HACCP (Pronounced Hassip) is a Systematic Quality Method for the Food and Beverage industry and service to detect and control the possible chemical, physical, and biological hazards within a process.

HACCP involve seven principles:

  • Analyze hazards.
  • Identify critical control points.
  • Establish preventive measures with critical limits for each control point.
  • Establish procedures to monitor the critical control points.
  • Establish corrective actions to be taken when monitoring shows that a critical limit has not been met.
  • Establish procedures to verify that the system is working properly.

Establish effective record keeping to document the HACCP system.
